Introductory Day Courses for keeping Chickens
Welcome to my site for those of you who are interested in chicken keeping on a small scale and would like to know the basics of chicken keeping for pleasure!
I am Mary Lewis and I run a Bed and Breakfast on our small working livestock farm. My chicken keeping experience started in 1997 and I have enjoyed keeping and rearing different traditional breeds of poultry, ever since.
I aim to share this experience and knowledge on an introductory level, with those who would perhaps like to start keeping their own chickens or are just interested to learn more about this fascinating and popular hobby.
The course will start at 10am, with 1 hour for a buffet lunch (included in cost of course), and ends at 4.30pm.
Please advise me, on booking, about any particular dietary requirements or matters I need to know about, for your health and safety. This course is run for adults and young adults, over the age of 11 who are accompanied by their parent/guardian.
The day course consist of the following topics:
1. Choosing the breed for you.
2. Housing and Space requirements.
4. Hygiene and Healthcare.
5. Pests, Predators and Diseases.
6. Behaviour of Chickens eg broodiness and Introduction of New Chickens.
7. Summary of Day's events with Questions and Answers session.
At some point in the day you will learn how to handle chickens, so please wear suitable old clothing and appropiate outdoor footwear.
Printed notes will be provided, but feel free to add your own.
